Sailing in Heavy Weather – Storm Tactics

As someone who has spent countless hours teaching beginners the basics, I can tell you sailing becomes much more intuitive once you understand how wind, sails, and boat interact. I learned everything through trial and error on my family’s old daysailer, and I want to save you some of that fumbling around.

Sailing

Quick Answer: Take a basic course before heading offshore – seriously. Get comfortable with sail trim, tacking, jibing, and man-overboard procedures. Check the weather before every sail, not just when it looks questionable.

Building Core Skills

Master tacking and jibing in light air before you attempt anything breezy. Probably should have led with this: rushing into challenging conditions before you have fundamentals down leads to bad habits and sometimes dangerous situations. Learn to trim sails for different points of sail until it becomes automatic. Practice heaving-to – it’s the emergency brake every sailor should know cold.

Coastal Navigation

Electronic chartplotters are fantastic, but keep paper charts aboard as backup. Things have gotten complicated with all the technology available, but the basics matter: monitor forecasts, watch sea conditions, and plan passages with tide and current in mind. Know where you can duck in if weather changes – and have that information accessible before you need it.

Maintaining Your Boat

Rigging, sails, engine, electrical systems – everything needs regular attention. Carry spares for the items that fail most often. Most importantly, know your specific boat’s capabilities and quirks. That’s what makes the learning process so endearing to us who’ve been through it – every boat has personality, and understanding yours is half the battle.
