Sun Odyssey 409 Cruiser Review
Choosing a production cruiser has gotten complicated with all the builders and model variations flying around. As someone who chartered a Sun Odyssey 409 in the BVI for a week and then spent two years shopping for one to buy, I learned everything there is to know about this boat. Today, I will share it all with you.

The 409 caught my attention at the Annapolis boat show in 2013. I was walking the docks, stepping on and off boats all day, and the Jeanneau stood out because it felt bigger inside than its 40 feet suggested. A few months later, I chartered one in Tortola, and a week of living aboard confirmed what the boat show visit hinted at. This boat is a serious cruiser for the money.
Design Philosophy
Jeanneau partnered with Philippe Briand for the hull design, and Marc Lombard contributed to the deck and interior layout. The result is a boat that prioritizes livability without completely giving up sailing performance. The hull has moderate beam carried well aft, which opens up the interior volume enormously. The chine at the waterline adds stability and helps the boat track well downwind.
Probably should have led with this section, honestly — the design decisions explain everything you experience on the water. This is a cruising boat first, but one that sails better than most boats in its class. On our charter, we sailed from Tortola to Virgin Gorda to windward in 18 knots, and the boat pointed respectably and carried good speed. Not a racing machine, but far from a barge.
Interior Layout
The interior is where the 409 earns its reputation. Three-cabin, two-head layout is standard, and the space management is excellent. The saloon has a proper settee to port and a nav station to starboard that is functional without eating up living space. Natural light comes in through large hull ports and deck hatches, which makes the cabin feel open and airy rather than like a cave.
The galley is arranged in an L-shape with enough counter space to actually prepare a meal. I made dinner for four every night on our charter and never felt cramped. The refrigerator is reasonably sized and the stove gimbals properly. Storage throughout the boat is well thought out — there are lockers and cubbies in places you would not expect, and they hold a surprising amount of gear.
That’s what makes the 409 endearing to us cruising couples — it feels like a home, not just a boat you happen to sleep on.
Sailing Performance
The 409 comes with either a shoal keel or a deep keel. The deep keel version points higher and performs better upwind, but the shoal keel opens up shallow anchorages in the Bahamas, Chesapeake, and similar thin-water destinations. I sailed the deep-keel version on charter and was happy with the pointing ability.
Under main and genoa in 12-15 knots, the boat moves at 6.5 to 7 knots without effort. It balances well with a light weather helm that gives you feel without fatigue. The helm station is well laid out with good visibility forward and decent access to the primary winches. Jeanneau offers an optional tiller, which purists appreciate, but most 409s have a wheel.
In light air, below about 8 knots of breeze, the 409 struggles a bit like most production cruisers with moderate displacement. An asymmetric spinnaker helps here if you have one. In heavy weather, the boat is reassuringly stable. We sailed through a squall near the Baths with gusts to 30 knots, and after a quick reef the boat handled it without drama.
Build Quality
Jeanneau is a production builder, and the 409 reflects that. The hull layup is solid and the structural grid is well bonded. The hardware is appropriate for the class — nothing exotic, but functional and properly installed. Where Jeanneau cuts corners compared to semi-custom builders is in the interior joinery. It is good, but if you look closely you will see panel construction rather than solid wood in some areas. For the price point, this is expected and reasonable.
I’m apparently one of those buyers who checks every locker hinge and drawer slide during a survey while most people just look at the overall impression. The 409s I inspected were consistently well assembled. The gel coat finish was smooth and even, and the deck hardware was properly bedded.
Systems
The standard systems package is adequate for coastal cruising. The electrical panel is clearly labeled, the plumbing is accessible for maintenance, and the engine — a Yanmar diesel — starts reliably and provides enough power for maneuvering in marinas. For extended cruising or offshore work, most owners upgrade the house battery bank, add solar panels, and install a watermaker. The boat accommodates these additions well because Jeanneau left enough space in the right places.
The Market
The Sun Odyssey 409 was produced from 2011 to around 2016, and a healthy number of used units are available. Prices range depending on year, condition, and equipment level. Charter boats tend to be cheaper but often have higher hours and more wear on soft furnishings. Privately owned boats in good condition command a premium but are usually better maintained. Either way, get a full survey before buying. The survey on mine turned up a few minor issues that the seller addressed, and knowing exactly what I was buying gave me peace of mind.
Who This Boat Is For
The 409 is ideal for a couple or small family who wants a boat that sails decently, lives comfortably, and does not require a boatyard budget the size of a mortgage payment. It is not a racing boat, and it is not a blue-water passage maker without modifications. What it is, is a very good coastal and island cruiser that lets you enjoy sailing and then enjoy being on the hook afterward. For that purpose, it is one of the best values in the 40-foot production cruiser category.
