No single tape is the “most durable” choice for every boat or dock repair. For a temporary patch on a clean, smooth, nonporous wet surface, Flex Tape and Gorilla Waterproofing Tape publish underwater application instructions. Neither should replace a structural hull repair, a proper through-hull repair, a pressure-rated hose repair, or a manufacturer-approved sealant.
This independent guide compares published product instructions; it does not claim personal testing. The right product depends on the material, water pressure, whether the surface is wet, movement, UV exposure, temperature, fuel or potable-water contact, and whether the repair is temporary or permanent.

Best for a temporary wet patch: Flex Tape
Flex says its original rubberized Flex Tape can be applied to wet surfaces and underwater. Its instructions call for a clean surface, a patch larger than the damage, firm pressure, and removal of trapped water or air.
The manufacturer also states that Flex Tape is a temporary emergency repair, not a permanent fix. It does not recommend the product for high-pressure applications, potable-water contact, flammable materials, radiator hoses, tires, structural uses, or some plasticized, oily, silicone, and water-repellent surfaces.
Use it when: a compatible smooth surface needs temporary water exclusion while you control the situation and reach a safe place for proper repair.
Do not infer: that an underwater marketing demonstration proves suitability for a loaded hull laminate, through-hull, seacock, pressurized hose, fuel tank, or long-term immersion on your material.
Best alternative for a smooth nonpressurized patch: Gorilla Waterproofing Tape
Gorilla describes its wide waterproofing tape as suitable for holes, cracks, gaps, and tears, including some underwater applications. The published directions require a patch larger than the damaged area, rounded corners, aggressive pressure, and complete contact on a clean, smooth, nonporous surface. When possible, Gorilla recommends patching both sides.
Its limitations are especially important aboard a boat: the company says not to use the tape on seams or applications under pressure. It may not adhere to silicone or water-repellent materials, and trapped water, air, wrinkles, or gaps can prevent a seal.
Gorilla calls the bond permanent in its consumer instructions, but that describes the adhesive product—not a permanent marine structural repair. Removal may damage the surface. A tape patch over damaged fiberglass does not restore laminate strength.
Flex Tape versus Gorilla Waterproofing Tape
- Both publish wet or underwater application guidance for compatible surfaces.
- Both require cleaning and forceful pressure.
- Flex explicitly describes the repair as temporary and excludes structural and high-pressure applications.
- Gorilla explicitly excludes seams and pressure and requires smooth, nonporous contact.
- Neither publishes a universal marine service life, pressure rating, hull classification, or approval for every plastic, rubber, coating, laminate, or potable-water use.
The better roll is therefore the one whose current instructions match the actual substrate and emergency—not the one with the broadest advertising claim.
Self-fusing silicone tape for hoses and cables
Self-fusing silicone tape has no conventional adhesive. Stretched layers fuse to themselves, which can make it useful for bundling, chafe protection, and temporary sealing on a compatible clean hose or cable. Product ratings vary, and those ratings depend on overlap, stretch, temperature, material, and application quality.
Depressurize and shut down the system first. Never assume a wrap makes a damaged fuel, exhaust, hydraulic steering, raw-water intake, sanitation, or pressurized potable-water hose seaworthy. Critical hoses should be replaced with the correct type, clamps, routing, and inspection. A self-fusing wrap can conceal continued deterioration.
Marine butyl tape is for bedding—not every leak
Marine butyl can be useful for bedding certain removable deck fittings because it remains flexible and compresses around fasteners. Successful bedding depends on clean surfaces, compatible materials, adequate flange area, correct fastener compression, and a properly sealed core.
Do not treat generic butyl tape as a universal through-hull, below-waterline, structural, or fuel-system product. Use the hardware and sealant manufacturer’s instructions. Some fittings require a curing marine sealant or another specified gasket system.
3M 5200 is not tape
The old article referred to “3M 5200 adhesive sealant tape.” That product does not exist in the form described. 3M Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 is a one-part polyurethane adhesive sealant supplied in tubes and cartridges. It cures into a strong, flexible bond and 3M lists applications including deck-to-hull joints, through-hull fittings, transoms, portholes, and some below-waterline work.
5200 is designed for permanent bonding and can be difficult to remove. It is not a peel-and-stick emergency patch, and it requires the correct substrate preparation, joint design, cure time, ventilation, and safety precautions. Choose 4200FC, 5200, silicone, modified-silane, butyl, gasket, or another system based on the component manufacturer and future service needs—not brand familiarity.
PTFE thread-seal tape: only where specified
PTFE tape seals compatible tapered pipe threads by filling the spiral clearance. It is not required on every threaded fitting. Flared, compression, gasketed, O-ring, straight-thread, and some plastic fittings seal differently. Extra tape can split female plastic fittings, interfere with engagement, shed fragments into a system, or mask damaged threads.
Follow the valve, pump, seacock, plumbing, or equipment manufacturer’s specified sealant and wrap direction. Never use color alone to decide that a thread tape is approved for a marine fuel, gas, potable-water, hydraulic, or sanitation application.
Sail and canvas repair tape
Adhesive sail-repair tape can stabilize a small tear in compatible clean, dry cloth. Round the patch corners, extend beyond the damage, apply on both sides when instructed, and reduce load on the sail. Fabric type matters: woven Dacron, laminate, nylon spinnaker cloth, acrylic canvas, and coated fabrics require different materials.
A tear near a seam, corner, reef point, batten pocket, luff, leech, or loaded hardware needs professional assessment. Tape does not replace structural stitching, reinforcement, or panel replacement. Our sail care and repair guide covers inspection and service timing.
What to do during an active hull leak
- Put on life jackets and alert everyone aboard.
- Find the source without taking unsafe risks. Check through-hulls, hoses, shaft seals, drains, and impact damage.
- Control the opening. Close the seacock if possible; use a correctly sized soft plug, collision mat, bracing, or other appropriate damage-control equipment.
- Start dewatering. Use installed and portable pumps while monitoring battery capacity and electrical hazards.
- Call for help early. Notify the Coast Guard or local rescue authority when flooding threatens the vessel; give position, people aboard, and the nature of distress.
- Use tape only as a supplemental temporary patch when its instructions fit the surface and doing so does not delay evacuation, assistance, or haul-out.
- Haul and inspect. Damage hidden behind a patch can spread or compromise laminate, core, fasteners, hoses, and fittings.

Surface preparation
Follow the chosen manufacturer’s directions. In general:
- identify the substrate and coating;
- remove salt, slime, oil, fuel, wax, loose paint, and debris using a compatible cleaner;
- avoid solvents that attack acrylic, polycarbonate, vinyl, inflatable-boat fabric, paint, or sealant;
- cut the patch before exposing the adhesive;
- round corners when instructed;
- use a generous margin beyond the damage;
- press from the center outward to remove water and air; and
- inspect edges, movement, and leakage continuously.
Cold, heat, UV exposure, curvature, texture, contamination, flexing, and water pressure can all reduce performance. A product’s service-temperature range does not mean it can be applied successfully at every temperature in that range.
Marine waterproof tape FAQ
What is the strongest waterproof tape for a boat?
There is no universal answer. Flex and Gorilla offer wide rubberized patch tapes with underwater instructions, but their limitations exclude important marine situations. Strength must be defined for the actual substrate, load, pressure, immersion, and duration.
Can waterproof tape permanently repair a fiberglass hull?
No general-purpose tape restores damaged laminate structure. It may slow leakage temporarily on a compatible smooth surface. The hull should be hauled, opened as needed, dried, assessed, and repaired using an appropriate laminate schedule and finish.
Can I tape a leaking through-hull?
Do not rely on tape. Close the seacock, plug or control the opening using appropriate emergency equipment, dewater, seek assistance, and haul out. The fitting, backing, hose, clamps, valve, and surrounding laminate may all require inspection.
Is duct tape waterproof?
Some products have water-resistant backings, but ordinary duct tape is not a dependable submerged marine repair. Use the exact product’s data rather than the generic “duct tape” category.
Can I use waterproof tape on electrical wiring?
Only if the product is specifically rated and approved for that electrical application. Gorilla states that its All-Weather tape should not be used as electrical tape. Marine conductors, terminals, overcurrent protection, and sealing require purpose-rated components.
