The best way to clean a fiberglass boat is to identify what is on the surface before choosing a product. Loose salt and dirt need a mild boat soap. Brown waterline stains often need a fiberglass-safe stain remover. Marine growth on an antifouling bottom is a different job entirely. A chalky, faded surface is oxidation, which requires polishing or compounding rather than stronger washing.

Best fiberglass boat cleaner for common jobs
Routine wash: a labeled marine boat soap
For normal dirt and salt, begin with the least aggressive option. Rinse loose grit away, dilute the soap according to its label, wash with a clean soft brush or mitt, and rinse before the solution dries. Working from cleaner upper areas toward dirtier lower areas reduces the chance of dragging grit across the finish.
A general-purpose hull cleaner is not automatically safe for every surface on the boat. Gelcoat, painted topsides, vinyl graphics, clear plastics, metals, teak, and antifouling coatings can react differently. Read the approved-surface list and test an inconspicuous spot first.
Waterline stains and rust: oxalic-acid hull cleaner
Star brite Instant Hull Cleaner is a current example formulated for stains on fiberglass, plastic, and painted hull surfaces. The manufacturer identifies an oxalic-acid formula and lists yellowing, scum lines, rust, blood, dirt, and leaf stains among its uses. Its directions call for application with a sponge or sprayer, a two-minute dwell, and a fresh-water rinse; tougher areas may need a second application and light scrubbing.
That does not make it a universal cleaner. Follow the product label and safety data sheet for gloves, eye protection, ventilation, first aid, incompatible surfaces, and disposal. Protect the trailer and nearby metal, graphics, fabrics, and bottom paint from spray and runoff. Never combine an acid cleaner with bleach, ammonia, or another cleaner.
Heavy deposits and growth: use the haul-out process
Heavy fouling below the waterline is not the same as a brown stain on bare gelcoat. The correct method depends on whether the bottom is bare fiberglass, painted, or protected by a particular antifouling coating. Follow the coating manufacturer’s maintenance instructions and the boatyard’s containment rules.
The EPA notes that aggressive in-water cleaning can release antifouling paint and biofouling into marina water. Its marina and recreational-boating guidance recommends minimizing harmful cleaners and, where feasible, cleaning hauled boats where debris and runoff can be captured. Local and state rules may be stricter.
How to clean a fiberglass boat hull step by step
- Identify the surface. Confirm whether you are cleaning bare gelcoat, painted fiberglass, a vinyl graphic, or antifouling bottom paint.
- Inspect before washing. Mark cracks, blisters, exposed fibers, loose paint, damaged decals, and fittings that should not receive cleaner or pressure.
- Choose a controlled work area. Follow marina or yard rules and prevent cleaner, paint residue, and debris from reaching the water or storm drains.
- Read the complete label and SDS. Use the specified personal protective equipment, dilution, temperature range, dwell time, and first-aid precautions.
- Protect adjacent materials. Cover or wet vulnerable metal, trailer components, graphics, fabric, and surfaces excluded by the product label.
- Rinse loose grit first. This reduces scratching during contact washing.
- Test a small area. Check for discoloration, softening, loss of gloss, or damage before treating a full panel.
- Work in manageable sections. Keep the surface within the specified dwell time and do not allow the cleaner to dry.
- Agitate only as needed. Use the least abrasive pad or brush suitable for the coating. Never assume a household scouring pad is gelcoat-safe.
- Rinse thoroughly and inspect. Repeat according to the label rather than extending dwell time. If clean gelcoat remains chalky, stop washing and assess oxidation.
Can you pressure-wash a fiberglass boat?
A pressure washer can remove loose dirt, but too much pressure, a narrow tip, or working too close can damage decals, seals, loose paint, old gelcoat, and fittings. There is no single safe pressure for every hull. Follow the boat, coating, and pressure-washer instructions; begin with the gentlest effective setup, maintain distance, and test first. Do not direct a concentrated stream into through-hulls, vents, bearings, electrical equipment, or damaged laminate.
Pressure washing also creates a wastewater problem. Use the yard’s designated wash area and containment system rather than allowing residue to run directly into the marina.
What about homemade fiberglass boat cleaner?
Homemade recipes are attractive because they are inexpensive, but “household” does not mean surface-safe or environmentally harmless. Acids can attack metals and some finishes; alkaline cleaners can strip protection; abrasives can scratch; and mixing bleach with acids or ammonia can release dangerous gases.
For routine cleaning, fresh water followed by a mild, labeled marine soap is the predictable choice. For a specific stain, use a product whose manufacturer names the surface and contaminant, supplies directions, and provides safety information. Never improvise chemical mixtures at the dock.
Cleaning mistakes that damage gelcoat
- Using a stain remover to correct oxidation.
- Letting acid cleaner dry or leaving it beyond the label’s dwell time.
- Using the same method on topside gelcoat and antifouling bottom paint.
- Scrubbing dirty gelcoat before rinsing away grit.
- Assuming “biodegradable” means harmless to aquatic life or legal to discharge.
- Mixing cleaners or transferring them into unlabeled containers.
- Applying wax before the surface is clean, dry, and free of unresolved damage.
After cleaning: polish or protect?
Clean, glossy gelcoat may only need the protection recommended by the boat or product manufacturer. If it is clean but hazy, faded, or chalky, more cleaner is not the answer.
