Five-Minute Winch Maintenance

Proper winch maintenance takes just minutes but can prevent costly repairs and dangerous failures at sea.

Start by removing the drum. Most winches have a retaining ring on top – lift it and the drum comes off.

Clean all parts with a degreaser and a soft brush. Pay attention to the pawls and springs inside.

Inspect the pawls for wear. They should click firmly when engaged. Replace any that look worn or damaged.

Apply a light coat of winch grease to the bearings. Use the manufacturer’s recommended lubricant.

Reassemble carefully, making sure all pawls are seated correctly. Test the winch before heading out.

Do this twice a season and your winches will serve you well for years.
