Fuel Dock Etiquette Every Sailor Should Know

Sailing etiquette at the fuel dock keeps everyone safe and the line moving. Here are the basics every sailor should know.

Have your lines ready before approaching. Bow and stern lines should be coiled and ready to toss.

Call ahead to the dock on VHF if available. Let them know you’re coming and what side you’ll tie up on.

Fuel first, then move off the dock to handle paperwork or shop. Others are waiting.

Don’t leave your boat unattended at the pump. Stay aboard or within earshot.

Be ready to help the boat behind you with lines. It’s the sailing community way.

Small courtesies make the waterways more pleasant for everyone.
